Visiting Espelette, famous for the production of the local chilli pepper, has become a must-do activity. Houses there are covered in long strings of chilli peppers attracting a growing number of visitors. Specialist shops and local producers offer peppers tied in long strands, powdered, pureed and jelly form. At the Maison Antoon on the road leading to Cambo-les-Bains, you’ll even find it in chocolate or, at Itxassou, in black cherry jam which is eaten with the famous sheep milk cheese.
Along your walks don’t forget to try the local Basque cider and beer, the equally famous almond-cream cake, not forgetting the cherry jam, macaroons, Bayonne cured ham and Banka trout. Gourmets will love the specialities from the Basque country!
From the village of Sare, hop on board the little Rhune train for a trip to what the Basques call ‘mythical mountain’. On your way up, look out for the sturdy little ponies called Pottocks, Manek ewes and Griffon vultures. The view from the top is sumptuous!
Barely 30 minutes away from the golf course, the beaches of Biarritz, Bidart and Saint-Jean-de-Luz await you. From Socoa and its fort, you can drive along the cliff-bordered coast road until you reach Hendaye. For the more adventurous, why not plan a trip to San Sebastian in Spain?
And on a more historical note, visit Bayonne with its old quarter, its ramparts, cathedral and boutiques. A chocolate break is a must!
